This time we talk about Nightcrawler (including many spoilers!).

Despite never having seen the film and not knowing anything about it, Andy Balaam (Clueless Andy) manages to score a hit by saying he reckons (from the title) that it’s a bit like Repo Man and Andy Cockerill (Expert Andy) tells him he may very well be right.

Another good discussion. I really liked Nightcrawler – the style of the cinematography, look and feel from being mainly shot at night. Jake Gyllenhaal was very good, Andy C I agree it is hard to come up with a bad movie he has done.

You didn’t talk about how Bloom forced a date with Nina. I think that marks a turning point in the movie. In my mind he went from being weird to being creepy.

You mentioned NBK, which has not stood the test of time. Comes over as being almost comical, your point about the different movie stocks comes from the fact that they were filming themselves in the movie. But you are right, there is a point when you start cheering for them. In NBK they are trying to make the headlines, where as in this he is just nudging the line to get a better story. So its similar, but not the same if you get what I mean.

Nightcrawler is vastly superior in my opinion. Also it is hard to work out when it is set, I think this is intentional. Perhaps to keep it still relevant in the future. The style in the film is very late 80s perhaps early 90s obviously pre internet. It only took $8.5m to make so in Hollywood terms it was still pretty indie – it did $10m on the opening weekend so a winner in that sense. I need to watch it again soon, perhaps I will notice a few more things on my second viewing.

Yes, I think you’re probably right that Natural Born Killers doesn’t stand the test of time. Certainly in my head I don’t feel as positive about it as I once did.

Thanks Fasih, great comments and great to hear you are enjoying the show. I’d completely forgotten about the date between Bloom and Nina, it is indeed super creepy.
