“The Red Turtle” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 13

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of The Red Turtle. Andy Balaam thinks it might be a rollicking Disney adventure, but Andy Cockerill sets him straight that it’s a beautiful story of love and family with not a single word spoken. They speculate about what it all means, and Andy B somewhat inexplicably goes on about the video game Brothers.

“Prevenge” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 12

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of Prevenge. Andy Balaam suggests it’s a computer game spin-off based on Worms, but after a brief discussion concluding that would probably not make for a brilliant game, Andy Cockerill explains it’s a comedy slasher about a pregnant woman taking revenge on behalf of her unborn child by a series of grisly killings. The discussion of what the film means is discussion in an unsatisfactory manner.

The conversation also wanders hinter and yon.

“The Autopsy of Jane Doe” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 11

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Andy Balaam thinks it’s a rough cop drama, but Andy Cockerill explains that it’s just a really well-done horror. They briefly discuss the fact that the only significant female character doesn’t move or speak, and is pure evil, but fail to address adequately the question of whether this is a metaphor for modern film-making’s overall approach.

There is brief discussion of loads of other films, including Blade Runner 2049 (which they haven’t seen) and Pitch Perfect (which they have, and surprisingly liked).

Oh, and a tiny bit of Twin Peaks.

“Baby Driver” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 9

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film Baby Driver.

Another podcast from Glastonbury Street, just down by the wells. Andy Balaam once again thinks it’s a rollicking Disney adventure about a baby with a moustache, but Andy Cockerill raves about an amazing music-set action film that seems note perfect.

“Hacksaw Ridge” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 8

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film Hacksaw Ridge.

At the end of a long evening, Andy Balaam speculates that the film is about the redemptive journey of an unsympathetic ridge-hacker, but Andy Cockerill struggles through the heckling to explain it’s an inspiring and violent story of a man who refused to fight, but insisted on going to war.

“Swiss Army Man” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 7

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film Swiss Army Man.

Andy Balaam thinks it is a bleak, snowy film about a man who is lost, but Andy Cockerill explains that it is a light-hearted comedy about a man who is about to commit suicide when he meets a corpse who becomes a better friend than any he has had in his life.

(Includes bonus discussion of Wonder Woman.)

“WannaCry Ransomware Attack” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 5

Andy Cockerill questions Andy Balaam about what happened to all those NHS computers and whether we should be scared. Andy Balaam answers that it was something called WannaCry and we should only be moderately worried, and we should all Update and Backup. Light discussion of the ethics of state-sponsored vulnerability exploitation ensues.

“Kubo and the Two Strings” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 4

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film Kubo and the Two Strings.

Andy Balaam (who hasn’t seen it) thinks it’s a Studio Ghibli film about a boy who meets a talking guitar, and isn’t as far off as he usually is. Andy Cockerill explains that it’s a beautifully-crafted stop-motion film about a boy defeating evil with the help of the spirit of his mother who has inhabited a stone monkey.

“Hunt for the Wilderpeople” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 3

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Andy Balaam (who hasn’t seen it) thinks it might be a modern take on a fairy-tail taking place entirely inside a castle, with a man with a big beard, but Andy Cockerill patiently explains that it is a New Zealand comedy drama about the growth in trust between a foster father and son, with lots of humour, beautiful scenery and serious heart.

“The Girl with All the Gifts” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 2

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film The Girl with All the Gifts.

Andy Balaam, having heard nothing about the film except its title, suggests this is a short, earnest high-school drama ghost story with a strange final third, but Andy Cockerill clarifies that it is nothing of the sort – in fact being a medium-length zombie drama featuring a very worn-out looking post-apocalyptic-event London and some children who are also intelligent fox-like zombies.

“High Rise” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 3, Episode 1

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about the film High Rise.

Andy Balaam heard a review so Andy Cockerill steams straight in explaining that it’s a surprisingly entertaining film that shows us how little has changed since the book on which it was based was published (in the ’70s), and provides biting sci-fi satire on the state of war between classes.

“What is Coding?” – The Good Robot Andys, Season 2, Episode 10

Discussion (and lots of spoilers) about what Coding is.

In a shocking reversal, Andy Balaam plays the expert as he tries to explain a bit about what programming is, where it came from, and how you can get into it. Andy Cockerill looks up on the Internet what a bug is.

Here are some of the things we mentioned:
